Aakash-India’s Own Tablet

In India now you can get an Android tablet for just rs-2900. Yes you read it right. It’s just rs-2900.after almost 2 years “Aakash” is on its way.this cheapest tablet was launched in the country’s capital New Delhi by human resource development minister Kapil Sibal.he also handed 500 Aakash tablets to students who will trial them.government is planning to buy 100,000 of the tablets which will be given to 10 million students across the country in few years.

Aakash is a Hindi word meaning “sky” and according to the announcement, the Aakash tablet costs $50 to develop. However, with taxpayers subsidizing the cost of the device, it is anticipated that the device will retail for $35. At $35, the device will obviously not have the top of the line features, but the goal of this device is to help villagers that live in impoverished rural India who really don’t have access to a lot of 21st century technology.

The device which comes in at 13-ounces in weight does have some features that will allow for basic computing. It will include a 7-inch touchscreen display as well as have 2 USB data ports, 256MB memory, headphones and WiFi network access. This should be just enough to get users onto the Internet through local hotspots. Datawind which is the company that has developed this tablet has also indicated that they are working with local Internet providers to see if a deal can be reached to bundle an upgraded Aakash tablet with lower network access rates.
